Good post, though it's partially based on some misconceptions that are common in the West.

First, what Khrushchev told at that conference was not exactly the truth. He blamed the genocide of Soviet peoples commited by the Communists, personally on Stalin, while most of the Politburo members, whose agenda Khrushchev was advancing, were just as zealous at killing their compatrots. He declared - and most Leftists in the West still believe it - that Stalinism was a deviation from Marxism-Leninism. That indeed "removed the first brick from the wall", as you write, because Stalin's policies were nothing but the logical continuation of Lenin's (and the Left's beloved Trotsky's) policy of "red terror." Communism, as both Lenin and Stalin knew very well, was unsustainable without mass murder. That was the truth their successors chose to ignore, because in a state that is based on destroying it's own citizens even the rulers were not safe - and so Khrushchev and Co. opted for safety, which was the main implication of his speech. From then on, the Soviet regime no longer extorted loyalty at gunpoint: it was buying it with relative piece and propaganda.

Another point I'd like to make is that the comparison of Hungary in '56 and Ukraine '04 is hardly valid. Hungarians, in their vast majority, did not want Soviet rule at all; they saw the Soviets as occupiers, and they were indeed occupied. Ukraine was not exactly occupied by Russia in 2004, and Yushchenko's supporters did not overwhelmingly outnumber their opponents. They won a fair, in my opinion, victory, but it wasn't quite "the people vs. the occupiers" as it was in Hungary. Such comparison suggest a rather idealistic view of the Orange revolution, which I think can be dangerous.

Sir I live in an extremely conservative society. here in NWFP. Pakistani women don't have any rights. Here in our town there is only 1 girl's school where the dress is to wear a burqa. Sir my trouble is after 2 months (i.e. 1st week of November) my parents are going to marry me with my cousin who is almost twice my age and already has one wife. I am only 16 and according to Pakistani law my wedding is illegal. My going-to-be husband is illiterate and son of a mullah. I DON'T WANT TO MARRY HIM.

My friend married a man who already has 2 wives in advance. He beats her regularly like animal and without any reason. He even rapes my 16 year old friend. Sir in NWFP the practice of polygamy and female torture is considered to be a symbol of mardangi (man hood). I know that my future as an Muslim women is same. Whole life I have to spend in his house. Here women are not allowed to go to market and not allowed to talk with other man. Muslims treat women like an animal

Sir I read the article of Qadir Sheikh. I also think that I have HINDU blood running through my veins rather than mughal blood. But I can’t express my feelings here; bcoz here if I declare myself as Hindu girl then Muslims will kill me. Sir All y friends hate Islam and want to be HINDU. I've never written to any government agencies before, but I'm writing now to express my outrage and disgust at the position the State Department assumed on the Mohammad cartoon issue. The position is hypocritical for one simple reason: where was Mr.Higgins when foreign state-owned media published anti-semitic cartoons? Or is antisemitism acceptable to the State Department because Jews don't blow Americans up?
The spokesman's hypocritical comments are disgraceful and cowardly. The good people at the State Department seem to have forgotten that their purpose is to represent American interest to the outside world, not the other way around. I hope that the Congress acts more responsible than the State Department, and the Department's budget gets cut, because I don't want my tax money to fund defeatism.

It is simple enough. Google is talking out of both sides of its mouth. Google is perfectly willing to posture as a brave defender of the privacy of its users in the U.S. marketplace it already dominates while caving to the immense commercial opportunity awaiting it in China.
