First, what Khrushchev told at that conference was not exactly the truth. From then on, the Soviet regime no longer extorted loyalty at gunpoint: it was buying it with relative piece and propaganda.

Another point I'd like to make is that the comparison of Hungary in '56 and Ukraine '04 is hardly valid. Hungarians, in their vast majority, did not want Soviet rule at all; they saw the Soviets as occupiers, and they were indeed occupied. Ukraine was not exactly occupied by Russia in 2004, and Yushchenko's supporters did not overwhelmingly outnumber their opponents. They won a fair, in my opinion, victory, but it wasn't quite "the people vs. the occupiers" as it was in Hungary. Such comparison suggest a rather idealistic view of the Orange revolution, which I think can be dangerous.

Hi,
I've never written to any government agencies before, but I'm writing now to express my outrage and disgust at the position the State Department assumed on the Mohammad cartoon issue. The position is hypocritical for one simple reason: where was Mr.Higgins when foreign state-owned media published anti-semitic cartoons? Or is antisemitism acceptable to the State Department because Jews don't blow Americans up?
The spokesman's hypocritical comments are disgraceful and cowardly. The good people at the State Department seem to have forgotten that their purpose is to represent American interest to the outside world, not the other way around. I hope that the Congress acts more responsible than the State Department, and the Department's budget gets cut, because I don't want my tax money to fund defeatism.

UPDATE Changing to MSN was, of course, a stupid idea, since Microsoft is at least as guilty as Google of appeasing the Chinese dictators. So, I'm still looking for alternatives. I'm also thinking of stopping using gmail.

I've been following news on Iran, and I recently came across this article in Weekly Standard - the only magazine I ever subscribed to, though not anymore. And the article annoyed me. Not because I disagreed what it said, but because it made me ask: Where was the author - and the Weekly Standard - before?
One of the reasons I didn't renew my WS subscription was because I found the magazine too predictable. The columnists sounded too much like cheerleaders for Bush, and offered too little analysis on what the US foreign policy should be and why. The whole 2005, what did they focus on? Supreme Court nominations and making fun of France? Who was pushing for tougher course of action in Iran? I remember Michael Ledeen was, but WS was really vague. In fact, even now, if you read this editorial by William Kristol, you will find that the thesis of his article is pathetically abstract - We can't rule out the use of military force. Who are you writing for, Mr.Kristol? NYT-reading soccer moms?
And President Bush and Condoleezza Rice are serious. - says Mr.Kristol. How does it compare to this, written at about the same time in the same magazine of his:
Truth be told, the important voices at the State Department on Iran, which comprise now and then the Near East Bureau diplomats but especially the Europeanists riding high under Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, would have preferred to adopt a strategy geared more toward carrots than sticks.
If WS doesn't turn the heat on the State Department, as well as the CIA, who will? I'm browsing through front-page articles of WS. William Kristol writes about Mozart. Matt Labash writes about Christmas and our culture, and his style is just too cute and convoluted to quickly understand what his point is.
The Weekly Standard seems like a right-wing version of the New York Times - high-brow, soft and predictable. That's not what I wanted when I subscribed. If this is the most aggressive foreign policy magazine in this country, then I don't need any policy magazines.

The Iranian girl on the bottom picture had the guts to go out and protest against the mullah's regime - you know, the people who insist on stoning women for extramarital sex, and who jail and torture those who express any disagreement.

Her picture was used by Code Pink, a leftist feminist group, for a recruiting collage. Needless to say, the group opposes doing anything to help oppressed Iranians to overthrow the mullas. Because fighting the racist sexist imperialist Bush regime - along with exposing the horrors of bringing democracy to Iraq - is much more important.
